Deb's Greenhouse Leanne

Debbie and Cody Foisy, of Deb’s Greenhouse, have been operating in their new location just outside of Morinville officially since the Spring 2017. They have operated Deb’s Greenhouse out of Yellowhead County since 2009. At their location in Yellowhead County, they received numerous awards, including winning 1st place in the local Agricultural Fair for the best vegetable garden in 2012 and in 2013 they were awarded grower of the year from the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association (AGGA). In addition, in 2014, Deb was a finalist (1 of 3 in North America- Deb being the only Canadian) in the Dummen-Red Fox Retailer of the Year Award and in 2016 she was awarded winner of the Top 10 under 40 from Greenhouse Canada. Deb has had numerous articles published in industry magazines including Greenhouse Canada and Grower Talks/Green Profit. Deb was even on the cover of Greenhouse Canada in November 2015. Deb Foisy is passionate for the horticultural industry and has been a speaker at Canadian conferences for the greenhouse industry, and as well for Alberta agriculture.

Deb’s Greenhouse, formerly known as Fred’s Flowers near Morinville, has been doing some renovations and will be adding another 3,000 square foot addition to the west side of the greenhouse for retail operations this Summer. Deb’s Greenhouse is seasonal and is open to the public in the Spring. The greenhouse will be closed as of the end of June to prepare for the renovations, an enhanced retail area, and preparations for at least 20 new classes to commence in September/October. Alongside the innovative growth contained in the greenhouse, the classes Debbie offers are also growing and continue to develop. New classes next Fall will also include house plants and painting.

As the President of the AGGA the past three years, Deb has a passion for growing alongside her other natural talent in woodworking. Her parents and grandparents were also gardeners and she would often accompany her grandmother who nurtured large gardens including strawberries. Of a similar background, her husband also grew up in a family that gardened for themselves and Debbie knew at a young age she wanted to have her own strawberry u-pick. However, she discovered that strawberries are high maintenance and decided to focus instead on a raspberry u-pick. The u-pick was enhanced by a greenhouse in Yellowhead County that was managed by both Debbie and her husband Cody for seven years.

Knowing the situation of Fred’s Flowers, their friend Michiel Verheul from High Q was operating it in 2015, and when they viewed the property on a visit to High Q and could see the potential to grow their greenhouse operation. This move made sense to Deb and Cody, as they were ready to be closer to a larger municipality and a growing area which meant they could focus on growing their business.

Alongside the current greenhouse, she inherited an older historic home 75-100 years old (records and neighboring residents offer her varying information on its age), but Debbie instantly fell in love with her new family home and could see its potential. Years ago, Debbie was an interior painter, and is familiar not only with hands-on woodworking but also light drywall repair and enjoys putting new life back into the charming home. You can follow along in her renovations in a Facebook page called, “My Renovated Life: the money pit”.

Their children are 10, 11, 14 and 16, and her eldest, their daughter, just completed part of the Green Certificate program, which is an industry-led training program, and obtained a mark over 80% when tested on her agricultural knowledge. Debbie and Cody are training 3 students in this high school program.

Deb’s Greenhouse offers a total of 8,750 square feet of bedding plants and offers items for sale on her website, like hanging baskets and planter boxes for Spring pick-up. Succulents are another focus alongside vegetable transplants and select shrubs and trees by special order online or in store during the Spring. Debbie posts many innovative and detailed posts online in Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. Be sure to check out Deb’s Greenhouse for your next class or to bring some color and growth in (or outside) of your home to enjoy.

Debs Greenhouse offers a charm and variety to compliment the other independent greenhouses in the area and she asks, "When you're looking for plant advice, unique flowers and neat gift ideas - choose us first".
